The Unexpected Jump
Regional Fact: "In Co. Tyne & Ware, there is something called a Metro Centre which is the largest indoor shopping, entertainment centre, and indoor theme park."
My buddy from the UK told me this fact since he was born on the exact day and year it was open. We're going to go there while I'm there. He's been telling me a lot about the culture of the region, especially the Geordie/Mackem soccer rivalry. His advice when it comes to soccer conversations, "Just nod politely. If they force you into a corner, then go with the majority."
My itinerary was set up over Thanksgiving and it was set for me to fly on the 31st of January and arrive on the 1st of Feb, then wait until Feb 3rd for orientation and classes start later. Well, I recently received an e-mail from my UK Study Abroad Advisor telling me that the entire college changed it's date from Feb. 3 to Jan 21st. Yeah, that's a huge leap in such a short amount of time, so I'm hoping my US Study Abroad Advisor can help me pull it off. It's like my school saying to me, "You know, instead of having fall classes on Sept 1st, let's have them on July 1st." Not as large of a leap, but it still cuts into precious timing.
It turns out I can fly there early (Jan 16) and not worry about paying for the extra fare (but $25 b/c of date change), so I was freaking out about where I would stay since the dorms don't open until the 19th or 20th. Well, I bumped into my mentor Kayce (a fellow Commie major who has yet to strangle me for asking so many dumb questions) and we talked about how unorganized the campus is and such. Anyway, she told me that the hostels there are rather cheap (about 15 or more) and it looks like I might be staying in a couple on my way to college.
I should be studying for my final in history, but I'm just so excited! I only have 2 finals this semester, so I'm thankful for that. I need to create a list soon to see what stuff I should and should not bring with me. Their clothing sizes are like our clothing sizes back in the 1950's. Marylin Monroe was indeed a size 12, but back then the size 12 would be the equivalent to our size 6. A fellow traveler to Denmark talked about how one of her friends that was a size 8 had trouble finding clothes over there to fit her, so she asked Kayce for some advice on what kinds of clothing to bring.
Anyway, things are starting to come together, regardless of how much Fate is trying to tear plans apart. I really should get back to studying.
